A Systematic Review on the Effects of Aquatic Exercise on the Psychological Aspects of the Elderly

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this review is to examine the effects of aquatic exercise on psycological aspects of the elderly through a systematic review.

Methods : Articles published in domestic Korean journals between January 2001 and December 2017 were surveyed. For this the databases KISS and DBpia were searched for the terms: 'elderly', 'aquatic exercise' and 'water therapy'.

Results : A total of 12 articles were used in this Review. Each study was assessed qualitatively according to the American Occupational Therapy (AOTA), guidelines for systematic reviews. Results in the form psychological effects, stress, quality of life, self-concept, exercise emotion, psychological well-being and depression were synthesized.

Conclusion : Aquatic exercise intervention programs for the elderly has various effects on not only physical function but also psychological and cognitive functions. The results of this review should enable researchers to plan future studies and guide therapists in selection appropriate interventions. Additionally, this review has shown that systematic studies with high level of evidence are still rare in this field. Thus, future research focus on systematic, blinded, clinical studies.
